The role

President’s Choice Financial and Services (PCF&S) requires a Director, Communication, who is a critical and creative thinker, self-driven, with a strong work ethic.  The successful candidate will lead internal and external communication for PC Financial and Services, a dynamic business, with both long-standing and developing priorities.  The central responsibility of this role is to maintain a consistent narrative and enthusiasm for the business, its brands and products.  Success will be measured best by positive colleague culture and consumer uptake of the company’s spending and saving products, gift card programs, and The Mobile Shop telecom business.

This role is part of the broader Loblaw Corporate Affairs and Communication team, reporting to the department SVP.  Functionally, the role and its activities are entirely dedicated to the PCF&S business, reporting to the Sr. Director, Strategy, and closely partnered with the President and senior leadership team at PCF&S.  The role has one report:  Manager, Communication.

What you will do

Internal communication:

  • Manage a suite of communication tools (i.e. town halls, conferences, intranet content, internal social media, etc.) to broadcast business directives and culture priorities of the organization.

  • Create strategic communication materials and messages that get noticed.  Support company communication in all mediums, including executive speeches, PowerPoint, visual and video presentations, and more.

  • Drive culture:  The company culture is built on trust, authenticity and making connections.  This commitment relies heavily on communications that demonstrate these traits.

  • Create an inspired colleague population:  Provide 1:1 support for the president, to ensure consistent and digestible leadership messages in the right “voice”.

  • Create an informed colleague population:  Support key departments (e.g. HR, Marketing and others) to drive clarity around organizational programs.

  • Serve as a communication bridge from PCF&S to the broader Loblaw enterprise.  Find and create opportunities and tools for PCF&S to engage the retail businesses, and illustrate all the value PCF&S offers.

External Communication:

  • Reactive media relations:  Manage moderate volumes of inbound media inquiries.

  • Proactive media relations:  Identify opportunities to use social or traditional media channels to promote company programs, products, services or objectives.

  • Develop and execute creative program-based public and media relations campaigns, most often with agency support.

  • Heavy contribution to integrated marketing:  Work with internal partners (e.g. Marketing, Customer Service) to develop messaging for key business programs and launches.

  • Coordinate communication:  Play a central role in crisp cross-departmental messaging addressing ad hoc circumstances, from change management to issues management.

  • Partner with industry associations or third-party suppliers to manage broader interests or issues affecting the business.

  • Train spokespeople and occasionally act as spokesperson.

The qualifications we’re seeking

  • Minimum 7-10 years of experience in corporate communication.

  • Experience in financial services industry a plus.  Knowledge of retail a plus.

  • Strong verbal and written skills mandatory.

  • Demonstrated experience in both internal and external communications, ideally in an in-house corporate role.

  • A track record of creativity and an understanding of integrated communications programs.

  • Experience with agency oversight.

  • Exposure and service to senior, C-suite leadership.  The ability to counsel senior leaders.

  • Experience managing department, project and consultant budgets.

  • Proven strategic and project management capabilities, including leadership in creating, executing and measuring programs.

  • Ability to manage competing priorities and produce timely, quality results.

  • Strong attention to detail, highly organized and proactive.

  • Excellent communications skills with the ability to deliver strong presentations.

  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite of tools.
