DUTIES The TRU Legal Clinic Society was incorporated with Thompson Rivers University as the sole Member. It is the legal entity whose purpose is to provide legal assistance through the TRU Community Legal Clinic (TRU CLC). TRU CLC is mandated to provide legal services to low income clients, as well as opportunities for practical learning for students from the TRU Faculty of Law.

This work includes client case files, community outreach and public legal education. The Part-Time Supervising Lawyer is responsible for training and supervising student clinicians, providing litigation support to student clinicians and assisting with the day-to-day operations of the TRU CLC in conjunction with other Clinic staff. The Part-Time Supervising Lawyer works with the Clinic staff, under the direction of the Executive Director, to supervise student clinicians in their provision of legal assistance to clients, which may include:

providing summary advice in writing on various legal matters; drafting documents for clients, including pleadings for small claims matters and uncontested desk order divorces, simple wills, powers of attorney, and representation agreements; and representing clients in Provincial Court and before various tribunals (where permitted). MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIESThis position is responsible for assisting with the day-to-day operations of TRU CLC, including: consulting with students during and after client intake interviews to determine the level of services that may be provided to the client;

reviewing correspondence and legal documents prepared by student clinicians; supervising student clinicians during tribunal and court hearings and assisting them in preparing for such hearings; developing practical resources for use by TRU CLCs student clinicians, particularly in the Part-Time Supervising Lawyers areas of expertise; and coordinating with the Executive Director and the Full-Time Supervising Lawyer to develop the orientation, training and supervision of TRU CLC student clinicians.

As this is a part-time position the Part-Time Supervising Lawyer will be expected to work an average of 20 hours per week. REPORTS TOExecutive Director, TRU CLC


KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS This position requires an individual who: (1) has a LLB or a JD from a Canadian law school or from a law school in another common law country; (2) is a member in good standing of the Law Society of British Columbia or elsewhere in Canada; and (3) who demonstrates the following attributes: a minimum of three years of experience as a lawyer within relevant legal areas, including family law, elder law, residential tenancy, criminal law, or other poverty law issues;

experience in civil and criminal litigation; ideally, substantial experience working or volunteering in a poverty law clinic or a similar legal environment; and a flexible schedule that allows the Part-Time Supervising Lawyer to balance work for TRU CLC with other professional obligations and to provide additional litigation support for student clinicians during busy periods. Due to the part-time nature of this position, it is likely most suitable to a lawyer who is already practicing in the Kamloops area.
