Role Summary

The Business Intelligence Analyst plays a key and integral role in the delivery of successful BI and Analytics solutions to support and develop complex, cross-functional and enterprise-wide business intelligence solutions. As a subject matter expert, the BI Analyst is responsible for writing and editing formal analysis reports, presenting insights, forecasting service demands, and coordinating related work assignments, timeframes and deliverables. The position models complex enterprise-wide data problems, discovers business insights and identifies opportunities through the use of statistical, algorithmic, mining and visualization techniques. In addition to using advanced analytics and database skills, this role is also proficient at integrating and preparing large, varied datasets, architecting specialized database and computing environments, and communicating results.

In this role, the BI Analyst identifies actionable insights, recommend solutions for multiple businesses and influence the direction of the different businesses by effectively communicating findings to cross-functional and enterprise-wide groups. The BI Analyst works with senior leaders and corporate decision-makers as a data-driven advisor and partner on strategic issues. The BI Analyst uses data analysis to generate data driven insights, create quality metrics and produce actionable recommendations for a variety of internal and external business partners.

The position will validate findings using innovative, iterative, and proprietary models and approaches, while defending assumptions and results with business counterparts, and supporting sound organizational decisions. Using statistical, algorithmic, data mining and visualization techniques, the BI Analyst works on the Analytics team, which collects, analyzes, and transforms data into business forecasts and insights for the organization. The team works in a fast-paced and dynamic environment, balancing multiple projects and deliverables. The goal of the Analytic Team is to provide customers with timely, accurate, and actionable information through the use of business intelligence, data science, and data visualizations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build data models and reports in BI tools – including scripting of joins and loads, dashboards, variables, expressions, thresholds, and alerting – to meet the needs of all Maximus Canada stakeholders.
  • Design standard and custom enterprise-wide “views” and reports. Write and edit formal analysis reports, for review by executive and clients. Design corporate-wide “views” and custom reports for multiple business areas using proprietary and third-party data and models.
  • Effectively communicate analysis and findings through visualizations, documents and presentations, to all levels of leadership for internal and external businesses, as well as third-party clients. Develop on-demand, self-serve reports, interactive dashboards, and advanced visualizations that allow business partners to make informed and timely decisions.
  • Conduct analyses of functional business processes and functional requirements and participate in the development of business cases to support business process changes and/or IT projects. Coordinate project deliverables, monitoring status, and ensure tasks are completed within deadlines and approved policies, escalating issues as appropriate.
  • Create information and insights from data by integrating data from multiple systems and data sources. Understand the business environment and apply analytical and statistical methods. Support Continuous Improvement initiatives (across the enterprise) through analysis and measurement, development of best practices, which support enterprise-wide and customer business strategies and directions.
  • Identify potential data sources and coordinate with IT to enhance data collection procedures to develop unique insights and custom solutions for customers and Maximus executives. Explore the data and discovers patterns, meaningful relationships, anomalies and trends. Escalate data integrity issues or concerns, as appropriate.
  • Implement new statistical or other mathematical methodologies, algorithms and data models as needed to support descriptive, diagnostic, predictive, and prescriptive data modeling, analytics and reporting. Recommend the approval and selection of tools, standards, policies, procedures, data models, forms, structures, attributes and frameworks and mechanisms for data analytics.
  • Oversee the development and implementation (i.e., testing, issues resolution, etc.) of new and modified systems. Verify, analyze and test results to ensure solutions meet business needs.
  • Develop data stewardship and sharing policies and processes to monitor and analyze models, key performance indicators and data results. Recommend quality metrics. Ensure quality metrics are accurately documented and tracked. Creates and resolves data quality tickets, as needed.
  • Partner with other functional teams such as Business Performance, Application Development, Infrastructure, and our data vendors across and outside of the organization to identify unsolved user and business needs resulting in data powered and visualization solutions that scale.

Education and Experience

  • Post-secondary degree in data science, computer science, engineering, mathematics, economics, advanced statistics or an equivalent field
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in business intelligence/analytics including significant experience with BI Tools (e.g., Tableau, Qlik, PowerBI, Cognos, SAS, SAAS, etc.)
  • Write formalized reports and presenting findings and design visualizations on for quick insight
  • Requirements gathering and report design; statistical and mathematical modeling experience
  • Strong SQL skills and knowledge
  • Advanced Excel, including charting; MS Access (VBA skills an asset).
  • Demonstrated experience of collaborating with stakeholders using effective communication channels

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated knowledge and proficiency in data mining for multiple BI enterprise systems/databases
  • Intermediate knowledge of Python, R and next generation BI and AI, an asset
  • Up-to-date knowledge of business intelligence and analytics technologies, methodology and processes
  • Excellent analytical, research, and data visualization software skills
  • Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills
  • Effective organizational, story-telling, communication and presentation skills (written and verbal)
  • Strong understanding of advanced statistics concepts, as well as descriptive, diagnostic, predictive, and prescriptive analysis
  • Proven problem-solving skills using sound analytical thinking and judgment
  • Ability to prioritize, manage and execute multiple tasks and projects under tight timelines
  • Ability to mine and analyze data and use proprietary models to reveal actionable insights
  • Ability to influence change and deliver analytical insights to internal and external stakeholders
