Our client, a leading Engineering Company, one of the largest electrical energy suppliers in Canada, has an immediate need for a Professional Engineer with a strong background in electrical utility design . This is a contract position for one (1) year located in Burnaby, BC.
Description of Work:
As a team member with a strong background in electrical utility design you will be assisting the Project Engineer Specialists and Principal Engineer with projects and programs. Applying your engineering knowledge to provide engineering, estimating, planning, and quality management services for medium complexity projects and/or operations safely, with quality, within budget, and on time.
Experience and Role Accountabilities : Develop safe engineering solutions by using initiative & judgement to perform tasks including developing designs, analyzing and resolving problems, and interpreting engineering specifications on medium complexity and scope assignments for projects and operations. Assist project or operations management to meet safety, cost, quality, & time objectives by proposing changes in plans and estimated costs, recommending payment for work completed by contractors, preparing progress reports, coordinating work schedules and other similar tasks. Resolve highly technical and unusual design & field engineering problems by conducting independent studies and analysis, exercising independent judgment in selecting & interpreting information, recommending safe engineering designs to support successful operations and/or project completion. Participate in engineering practice by conducting independent studies & analysis, contributing to the development of technical standards, exercising judgment in selecting and interpreting information, recommending safe engineering designs, & making decisions related to methods and designs as well as providing guidance and advice to other engineering professionals to develop future capability. Deliver exceptional customer service by communicating with stakeholders and performing activities such as defining the scope of engineering/geoscience services to be provided, establishing the basic design criteria with the client, approving all related technical documentation, and assessing and reporting on work progress against standards, objectives, and specifications to support completion of projects safely, with quality, within budget and on time. The role will include assisting Project Engineer Specialists and Principal Engineer with projects and programs & managing low to medium complexity portions of the work through the process of planning, design and construction. The ability to establish & maintain positive relationships with staff, consultants, contractors, other utilities and vendors to provide high value, effective solutions. Provide assistance in engineering due diligence checks, as required. Support the development of cost estimates, schedules, scope of work, business cases, risk registers, procurement strategies, design plans, quality plans, decision framework documents, safety by design workshops and documents in the early stages of projects. Research & draft documentation on project issues with input from the Project Engineer. Participate in reviewing work-in-progress by assigned staff, consultants, contractors, vendors & providing weekly and monthly progress reports. Assist in resolution of project issues to maintain continuity of work for short periods of time if the Project Engineer is out of the office. Prepare and manage complex spreadsheets and track design progress and work processes.
Required Education and Skills Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or Professional Geoscientist (P.Geo.) and eligible for registration as such with Engineers & Geoscientists BC Professional Engineer registered with EGBC, with a strong background in electrical utility design, ideally substation electrical design. The organization uses a Digital Sign and Seal Technology. You may be required to subscribe to a digital seal technology service offered by Notarius Familiarity with CAD systems and drawing standards. Ability to use standard industry design/analysis software. Intermediate MS Office skills (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) Some knowledge of Protection and Control, and Telecom design is required. Knowledge of Transmission Line design, and any PLS-CADD experience is an asset. Ability to research and draft documentation on projects. Capable of preparing & managing complex spreadsheets to track design progress and work processes.
Required: Candidates must have a valid P.Eng registered in BC Eight (8) years of experience in a relevant engineering field or equivalent Must have experience with High Voltage substations. (188 kV and above) Excellent communication, technical co-ordination, interpersonal skills, and be a team player. You must be personable and work collaboratively with the Designers and Work Package Managers to develop various documents, track task progress and compliance checklist. Intermediate MS Office skills (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) Problem solving and analytical skills. Excellent technical writing skills.
Preference will be given to Candidates with the following: Any BC Hydro P&C, Telecom design and NERC CIP experience or knowledge is an asset. Experience in creating technical processes and interim sustainment processes (project construction to project close-out) Candidates should be located in BC. A Generalist Engineer that can support 3 lead PM's.
