Geological Engineer – Civil Design - Vernon, BC


Geological Engineer - Civil Design - Vernon, BCThis is a Geological Engineer- Civil Design opportunity with the largest power distribution organization in British Columbia and been recognized for excellence and been named one of B.C.’s Top Employers and one of Canada’s Best Diversity Employers for four years in a row.This is a full time, one year contract located in Vernon, BC. Looking for a professional Geological Engineer experienced with Rock and soil mechanics engineering design, field investigations and construction oversight at facilities located around the province.Geological Engineer – Civil Design Responsibilities:• A minimum two (2) years of in a relevant engineering field or equivalent.• Contribute to the development of safe engineering solutions by performing activities such as studies of limited scope and applying prescribed methods and techniques in solving problems for projects and/or operations.•Must have Degree in Geological Engineering•Must be eligible for enrolment as an EIT or P.Eng•Must be willing to relocate to Vernon, BC•Must have valid class 5 drivers licence•Rock mechanics experience is an asset• Assist with specific aspects of more complex engineering activities adhering to prescribed analysis, design, or computation methods by following established practices working under close supervision of a senior professional engineer who reviews work for accuracy, adequacy, and conformance with prescribed procedures.• Participate in engineering practice using initiative and judgement in making a few routine technical decisions, applying standards and following detailed instructions so that engineering standards are maintained.• Perform periodic tasks independently which may include on-site construction quality control and monitoring to ensure design compliance.• Assist with specific aspects of more complex engineering activities adhering to prescribed analysis, design, or computation methods by following established practices working under close supervision of a senior professional engineer who reviews work for accuracy, adequacy, and conformance with prescribed procedures.• Site investigation planning, supervision and inspection for stations and dams including: layout of drill holes, test pits, field mapping, specification of test requirements, preparation and implementation of interim dam safety risk management plans, in-situ testing, logging of soils and rock, collecting samples, and the installation of instrumentation etc.• Collection, analysis and interpretation of data obtained from site investigations and other published sources, including survey data, LiDAR, satellite imagery, GIS, soil maps, papers, reports, etc.• Characterize soil and bedrock into distinct units and estimate engineering parameters for design based on the geologic history, site investigation data, and other published sources.• Develop geologic models based on an interpretation of available sources, including published sources, investigation data and other sources.• Assess the potential for and impacts of geohazards, including faults, earthquake hazards, landslides, weak soils, etc.• Design of rockfall protection measures including, mesh, anchors, shotcrete, barriers, etc.• Perform stability and seepage analyses of embankments, slopes and excavations• Perform embankment dam foundation design and performance assessment, including grouting, assessment and design of drainage, rock characterization, seepage cut-off, etc.• Work from home to start but will be expected to work onsite in Vernon BC once pandemic restrictions are lifted. Will also need to work in the field during field season (start in May/Jun). •The successful individual will work on the Downey slide, north of Revelstoke (massive 9sq km ancient landslide above a reservoir). •Will also be required to work in the field. The main field work will be in Revelstoke and within driving distance from Vernon Geological Engineer – Civil Design Skills and Qualifications:• University graduate in applied science or engineering• Registered Engineer-in-Training or Geoscientist-in-Training with Engineers & Geoscientists BC or another jurisdiction and/or eligible for registration as such with Engineers & Geoscientists BC• Familiarity with CAD systems and drawing standards• Ability to use standard industry design/analysis software• Intermediate MS Office skills (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)• Intermediate English skills for professional environment, written and spoken• Degree in Geological Engineering.• Valid British Columbia Class 5 driver’s license.• Currently registered as a Professional Engineer with the Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC).• Knowledge and experience in geological engineering including:• Working knowledge of relevant software, including Rocscience products (RS2, RocFall.
