We currently have a full-time opportunity for a Director, Finance - Accounting Standards & Policies to join our Finance department based out of our offices in Stellarton, NS or Mississauga, ON. Job Description
The Director Finance Accounting Standards and Policies is a high profile, high impact role within the company with responsibility for development and application of corporate accounting policies, as well as leading a small team of professionals to provide ongoing technical accounting analysis and advice to key stakeholders across the company.
As a Director, Finance - Accounting Standards & Policies with Sobeys you will:
  • Accounting Standards
  • Develop and maintain Sobeys Inc. accounting policies and standards in accordance with IFRS
  • Provide leadership on key technical accounting for both recurring and ad hoc matters
  • Prepare roadmap to prioritize the most impactful and significant accounting polices for further development that is aligned with the company's priorities
  • Identify and recommend areas for accounting policy development that will assist Finance business partners in understanding, applying and implementing standards
  • Develop a system to track and monitor ongoing accounting matters to enhance visibility of common issues, identify areas of focus, and maximize the efficiency and effectiveness of the team
  • Lead training initiatives for internal stakeholders on accounting standards and other complex accounting topics as needed
  • Continuously monitor, research, and implement IASB, OSC, and other financial-related regulatory requirements as they relate to Sobeys Inc., and provide recommendations as needed
  • Review and assess complex accounting issues for compliance with IFRS and corporate financial policies, ensuring alignment with internal stakeholders and external auditors
  • Ensure overall compliance with Sobeys Inc. accounting standards, policies, and IFRS
  • Liaise with external and internal auditors on financial accounting and reporting policy issues as needed
  • Provide direct oversight of ongoing accounting for complex financial accounting matters and disclosures such as lease accounting, compensation and pension accounting
  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with key stakeholders and ensure effective communication and collaboration across Finance teams
  • Lead the review of key contracts throughout the organization to ensure appropriate accounting treatment is applied
  • Assist and ensure that ongoing system development adheres to IFRS standards
  • Be involved in special projects on an as needed basis to ensure the impacts of existing and new standards are understood and contemplated as part of the projects
  • Ensure compliance with CEO/CFO Certification requirements

People Leadership
  • Participate in the recruiting, interviewing and selection process of new employees. Provide leadership, coaching, development, training and career planning to direct reports
  • Ensure direct report roles and capabilities are optimally aligned with the department's strategic direction providing advice for continuous improvement to direct reports
  • Manage direct reports including: selection, orientation, training and development, performance management, succession planning and compensation
  • Identify individual development needs and provide coaching, support and direction in terms of on-the-job learning and formal training to create development plans that address gaps
  • Lead by example by focusing on personal career development and pursuing opportunities to increase relevant knowledge and skills
  • Support Sobeys talent management succession planning strategy, by making sure capable people are identified and have action plans in place that align to individual and organizational needs
Job Requirements
Your experience and resume will show us:
  • Undergraduate degree in business/accounting/finance
  • Professional designation (CMA, CA, CGA)
  • Ten years accounting/ finance experience in progressively responsible positions, including three to five years working experience in accounting policy or similar position
  • Strong financial and analytical skills
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Three years experience leading a team(s)
  • Project Management experience
  • Previous experience in the retail franchise environment is an asset
